Root canals save teeth that would otherwise be lost due to inflammation or infection in the pulp. In most cases, you'll notice a few changesroot canal in your tooth or mouth if you need a root canal. Root canal therapy is among the many services and treatments offered by Providence, RI, family dentists Drs. Marc and Lawrence Page.

Root canal warning signs and symptoms

You may notice one or more of these signs and symptoms if you need a root canal.

  • A Toothache: Pain is a clear sign that there's something wrong with your tooth. A visit to your Providence, RI, family dentist will determine if your pain is caused by an infection or inflammation in your pulp, a cavity, a cracked tooth or filling, gum disease, or another cause. Although you may experience severe, throbbing pain if you need a root canal, that's not always the case. Pain can be mild, moderate, or severe.
  • Sensitivity: You may experience pain after consuming either hot or cold foods and beverages. The pain may last a half-hour or more after you eat or drink something hot or cold.
  • Pain When Chewing: Chewing can be quite painful and uncomfortable if you need a root canal.
  • Change in Color: Teeth that need root canals sometimes become darker.
  • Gum Changes: Inflammation in a tooth can eventually affect the gums, causing swelling and tenderness. A pimple on the gum or pus on the gum surrounding a tooth can be signs of an abscessed tooth.
  • Illness: If your tooth is killing you, and you don't feel well, you may have a dental abscess. The bacterial infection can cause a fever, swollen lymph nodes, and facial swelling. A course of antibiotics will kill the bacteria, while removal of your tooth pulp during a root canal will end your pain. Don't put off calling the dentist if you notice abscess symptoms. The infection can spread to other parts of your body if you don't receive treatment as soon as possible.
  • Injury: A root canal may be needed if you fractured a tooth or your tooth was knocked out or became loose due to a blow to the face.
