It is always a good time to consider ways to improve upon our own oral hygiene

The holidays are often the busiest time of the year. We often have so much on our mind including get-togethers with family, last minute shopping and the millions of other little things that pop up every day. Even though we are busy, we all should remember to take time out to focus on health issues and remember to instill healthy habits. Take time out of your day to improve your dental health.

So, what can you do this holiday season to promote better oral hygiene?

Visit your dentistBrush Teeth

You should see your family dentist every six months for routine cleanings. Once a year we will also run X-rays to make sure that teeth are developing properly and that both gums and bones look healthy. During your cleaning, we can also remove troublesome tartar buildup that your at-home toothbrush just can’t remove. Plus, these visits also give you the chance to talk to us about your hygiene and ask any questions you may have.

Brush those teeth

You should be brushing twice a day for at least two to three minutes each time. Not sure if you are brushing for that long? Set a timer on your phone so you can ensure that you’re brushing long enough. However, don’t just focus on the length of time, also focus on effectiveness. Really make sure you brush all surfaces of your teeth, getting around those hard-to-reach spots, and also brushing your tongue.

Don't forget to floss

Did you know that flossing is the best way to prevent gum disease? While gum disease is completely preventable with proper oral hygiene, it still affects almost half of the American population. Untreated gum disease can lead to bone loss, receding gums and tooth loss.

If you notice that flossing easily irritates your gums, then you may not be flossing frequently enough. Floss every day, and you’ll notice that your gums will become tougher. To find out if you’re flossing effectively, let us show you how to properly floss the next time you visit our Providence office.

Replace your toothbrush

Have you been brushing with the same toothbrush for a while now? Do you notice that the bristles have begun to fan out? If so, it’s time to toss that old toothbrush and spring for a new one. Most toothbrushes should be replaced every three to four months. Old toothbrushes aren’t effective and can trap harmful bacteria that can cause gum disease.

These are only some of the ways you can promote better oral health for you and your family. If you’ve been putting off that much-needed dental appointment, then what better time to set up your next visit than before the end of the year?
