How does an implant work?

The implant is a tiny metal post that is placed into the socket of the gums and jawbone where your missing tooth was. Over the course of several months, the tissue and bone surrounding the implant will heal around it to become a permanent foundation.

About four to six months later we will open your gums up and place an abutment on top of the implant, which will serve to connect the dental crown to the implant. If you are missing more than one tooth then several implants will be placed throughout the jawbone to support dentures or a dental bridge.

Am I a candidate for dental implants?

There are many factors that your family dentist in Providence will need to consider before deciding your candidacy for implants including,

  • Your oral health: Of course if you want your implants to be successful it’s important that your mouth is healthy enough to support it. This means a mouth that is free of cavities or gum disease, and a jawbone that is strong and healthy enough to support an implant.
  • Your general health: Since you’ll require more than one surgery to get your implants this means you’ll need to be in tip-top shape in order to experience faster healing and lessen the chance of side effects. Those with chronic disorders should have their health issues under control before getting implants.
  • Your age: In most cases it’s not advised that children or teens get implants until their jawbones have fully grown. By placing an implant too early, you risk stunting the growth. Despite the age minimum, there is no limit to how old you can be to benefit.
  • Whether you smoke: Not only does smoking impede your body’s ability to heal but it also increases your chance of implant failure. Let us know during your consultation if you are a smoker.
