FAQs about porcelain veneers

What are they?

Porcelain veneers are thin, translucent wafers that are made of high-grade ceramic. Created to cover the fronts of teeth that have been flawed by stains, surface crazing, chips, and more, veneers are uniquely shaped and colored to beautify, strengthen, and reshape smiles. Your dentist cements them in place with a tooth-colored adhesive and high-intensity curing light.

Who can receive porcelain veneers?

Adults and older teens are both eligible for this treatment, which begins with Dr. Page examining your teeth and gums before recommending cosmetic treatments that meet your smile goals. While composite resin bonding and teeth whitening work well for ordinary stains and small flaws, veneers disguise more extensive problems on otherwise healthy teeth. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry maintains that this pre-treatment conference between dentist and patient is crucial to the success of any aesthetic dental service.

Is the process difficult?

No, it is not difficult, but it does take two visits to our office, each lasting one to two hours each. After your initial consultation, Dr. Page takes impressions of your teeth, resurfaces the enamel so that the veneers can fit properly, and places temporary laminates on your teeth to both protect them and normalize your appearance. He then sends instructions to a trusted dental laboratory where the ceramist creates each veneer with just the right shape, size, and color.

During your second visit to Page Family Dentistry, your doctor will remove the temporary veneers and try on the new ones with water or glycerin. This step determines the adhesive color and the proper veneer fit. Finally, he glues them in place and hardens the adhesive.

How long do veneers last?

Veneers last ten years or more. Just be gentle with them (don't chew ice or bite open packages with your teeth), brush twice a day, and floss daily to keep veneer margins free of plaque and tartar. Dental laminates are stain-and chip-resistant, but of course, they are not indestructible.

How will my mouth feel after veneer placement?

The bite and size of your teeth will feel a bit different at first, but people adjust relatively quickly to their veneers. Also, your gums and teeth may feel slightly sensitive for a while, but this, too, will normalize.
